"American Girl" Artist Inspires Young Girls School Stuff Submitted by Mary Greggains, St. Mary's School (Simsbury), on 2011-10-26. St. Mary's School in Simsbury held a book signing on October 4, 2011 with professional illustrator, Christine Kornacki -- a St. Mary's alumna. Ms. Kornacki illustrated a six-book series for American Girl's newest historical character dolls, Marie-Grace and Cecile. She displayed a collection of dolls along with the books. Girls showed up with their dolls and were eager to meet and speak with Ms. Kornacki as well as purchase signed copies of the books. The book signing was open to the public. In addition to signing copies of her work, Ms. Kornacki visited classes at St. Mary's School and spoke with students about her career as an artist. When asked how she decided to become an artist, Kornacki said, "I did arts and crafts all the time as a young girl, and I always loved art class at St. Mary's. I vividly remember having a realization in seventh grade that I wanted to make a career of art." "Being a freelance artist, Christine Kornacki is a wonderful example of a strong, amazingly talented, self-employed woman," comments Marie Gannatti, principal of St. Mary's School. "She is a fantastic role model for girls and young women everywhere, and we're so proud that she is a product of our school and the Simsbury community." She adds, "We appreciate that she takes the time to share her story and her work with us." St. Mary's School is the Farmington Valley's only Catholic school for preschool students through eighth grade. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
